Aberdeen Red Squirrel Citizen Science Success

  • Submitted by: Maggie Chapman, North East Scotland, Scottish Green Party.
  • Date lodged: Tuesday, 09 December 2025
  • Motion type: Standard Motion
  • Motion reference: S6M-20061

That the Parliament congratulates the Saving Scotland’s Red Squirrels (SSRS) partnership, led by the Scottish Wildlife Trust, on its citizen science work in Aberdeen; recognises the impact that volunteering has had on the red squirrel population in Aberdeen; commends the Scottish Wildlife Trust and the 30 local volunteers for recognising the importance of enhancing the red squirrel population in Aberdeen and the north east; understands that, in 2009, the grey squirrel population was growing and threatening the future of the native red squirrel population, but that, over the last 16 years, action has been taken to support the red squirrel population; further understands that there were 1,540 confirmed red squirrel hair samples identified between July and September 2025, with more than 900 taken since October, indicating a strengthening of the red population, and wishes the organisation and its staff and volunteers continued success in the years ahead as they safeguard this aspect of Aberdeen’s wildlife.
